Day Trip Yoyogi Uehara vol.4
Start your day with sio’s breakfast
The bistro is owned and operated by Chef Shusaku Toba, and it was awarded one star in Michelin Guide Tokyo 2020. Not only does it provide lunch and dinner, they also provide breakfast here. Given its popularity, the waiting time for reservation is around 1 month. I’ll report on the long-awaited breakfast in this blogpost.
Authentic atmosphere of Paris
Just outside the east exit of Yoyogi Uehara Station and up the hill, you will find the eye-catching blue sio. The owner-chef Mr. Toba says that the exterior of the restaurant is inspired by his favorite restaurant Septim in Paris. When you open the door, you are greeted kindly by the staff. The courteous service, stylish decorations such as lighting and dried flowers, and warm background music create a cozy atmosphere. When you take your seat, you are served a cup of tea, and you will surely be shocked by the taste of the original blend. I've never had tea like this before! Enjoy the aromatic, refreshing, and smooth taste of the tea.
Meet the Japanese set meal
While you are browsing the menu and figuring out the details, you are already served with the freshly prepared breakfast set. Since the bistro features an open kitchen, you can hear and smell everything in preparation while waiting. The Japanese breakfast set by a French restaurant is elegant and cohesive with a good visual. The beautifully balanced appearance and the steam that rises from the dishes will whet your appetite. The small bowls are just the right size, allowing you to enjoy a variety of them. The nutritious meal allows you to develop energy and go about your day in good spirits. Now let's take a closer look at the dishes!
Deep, rich and sweet pork miso soup
The pork miso soup, hot and full of flavor, could easily be called the main dish of a Japanese set meal. The richness of the pork, the large cut green onions, and everything else is a masterpiece that has been calculated to perfection. The recipe for this melt-in-your-mouth, mildly sweet pork miso soup is available in the chef's notebook! We hope you get a chance to reproduce it at home. “Shirasu” is a Japanese material that mixes well with olive oil and oyster sauce. “Spinach” is a ume-based dressing that spreads happiness in the mouth.
Unforgettable taste of the main dish’s silver salmon and white rice
Akita Komachi rice is used here. The rice is cooked to a firm texture by reducing water to the utmost level. The rice refill is free. Even though I don’t eat breakfast, I finished two bowls of rice in one sitting. The silver salmon was cooked to an impressive level! The fish skin is crispy and the meat texture is soft. The accompanying fish sauce and balsamic vinegar ponzu sauce was also a new experience for me. Even though it’s a Japanese set meal, the hint of French spice made it very stylish.
Summary
So this is the Japanese set meal at the popular French bistro sio. After the amazing experience, you’ll surely become a big fan. Given it’s only 4 minutes walk from Hmlet Yoyogi Uehara, be sure to make a reservation here as part of your morning activities!
