Living from Asakusa: Talk with Hmlet Vol.3
Talk with Hmlet” spotlights various Hmlet residents, exploring their lives and work while delving into their personalities.
In the third installment, we focus on Ryo, who lives at Hmlet Asakusa Tawaramachi and has participated in Hmlet community events.
Hmlet:Hi Ryo! Today, we’d love to hear about your life and work in Asakusa Tawaramachi. Could you start by introducing yourself?
Ryo:Hi there! I’m Ryo, originally from Chichibu City in Saitama Prefecture. I currently lead walking tours in Asakusa for foreign tourists and offer karate lessons, a traditional Japanese martial art. Since 2017, I’ve also been performing stand-up comedy in English around Tokyo, mainly in Asakusa and Shibuya.
Hmlet:That’s fascinating! What made you decide to live at Hmlet?
Ryo:In 2023, I met my fiancée in Tokyo, and she actually found Hmlet for us. We decided to move in together, and Hmlet Asakusa Tawaramachi was perfect since it’s close to where we first met in Asakusa and serves as a convenient base for both our work and hobbies.
Hmlet:That’s wonderful! Since moving in, how has Hmlet supported you?
Ryo:Hmlet organizes monthly social gatherings and various events for residents, so we were able to meet other people quickly after moving in. Personally, I’ve also received great support from Hmlet for planning an English comedy show for the residents and proposing other ideas—they’ve been really open to my suggestions.
Hmlet:It’s great to hear there’s such a strong sense of community. What do you particularly like about living at Hmlet Asakusa Tawaramachi?
Ryo:I love that it’s within walking distance of Asakusa, which is a popular tourist spot. Asakusa is always lively, especially around Sensoji Temple, and it’s easy to visit stylish cafes in nearby areas like Kuramae and Ueno. Plus, the Ginza Line gives me easy access to Shibuya, so I can fully enjoy life in Tokyo.
Hmlet:The location sounds amazing! Finally, could you share your goals and what you hope to achieve in the future?
Ryo:My goal is to attract more participants to my walking tours and karate lessons in Asakusa and to launch an event that combines Japanese culture with stand-up comedy later this year. In the future, I’d also love to perform at comedy clubs abroad, expanding my challenges even further.
Hmlet:Those are big ambitions! We’re cheering you on! Thank you for your time today.
Ryoさん:Thank you as well!
